April/May 2011

From Kay

I am so proud of our military and intelligence communities who brought down Osama bin Laden, the 9/11 mass murderer. I hope this brings some peace to our 9/11 families who waited 10 years for bin Laden's demise and our military families whose loved ones were killed while fighting for our country. It gives me great satisfaction that the last thing Osama bin Laden saw was U.S. Special Forces kicking in his door.

I am the Chair of the Senate Armed Services Emerging Threats Subcommittee, which oversees Special Operations Forces. Since taking office, I traveled to Afghanistan three times to visit with troops on the ground and our military leaders. Our troops are the best in the world, which was proven by the Osama bin Laden takedown, and they remain vigilant in their mission to disrupt, dismantle and defeat the terrorists.

As our state works to recover from last month's storms, my thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims of these destructive tornadoes. Storm victims can contact my office for assistance. Last week, I visited North Carolina's disaster central command center in Garner, and I continue to work with the Governor, the federal government and local officials to provide assistance to those affected by these devastating storms. If you or a family member needs assistance, please call my office at 877-852-9462 or visit my storm recovery page.

Sincerely,

Senator Hagan talks to Fox and Friends about the killing of Osama bin Laden. Click above to watch.

Hagan Calls for Timely Action from
Administration's Gas Working Group

  • The summer driving season is nearly here, and gas prices in North Carolina are almost $4 a gallon. Senator Hagan knows that rising gas prices place a real burden on our families, small businesses, seniors, and military and veteran communities.

  • Skyrocketing gas prices impact everything from food costs to shipping costs to tourism revenue. Senator Hagan believes we must do everything possible to ensure rising gas prices don't impede our economic recovery.

  • Last month, she sent a letter to the White House urging the Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group to report their recommendations to Congress before the July 4th holiday, when many Americans get on the road. To read her letter to White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley, click here. Hagan wants to ensure that Congress can enact any necessary legislative remedies in a timely way.

  • Hagan also encouraged the Working Group to consult with the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to analyze the impact of high gas prices on our veterans and returning heroes who face higher than average unemployment rates.

Hagan Invites Holly Petraeus to Fort Bragg

  • This month, Senator Hagan invited Holly Petraeus, Director of the Office of Servicemember Affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and wife of Gen. David Petraeus, to Fort Bragg to gather input on how Petraeus' new office can work to support military families and help them avoid predatory lenders. For more information about the Office of Servicemember Affairs, click here. Hagan cosponsored the Protecting Service members from Mortgage Abuses Act to protect military families from wrongful foreclosures.

Senator Hagan Works to Help NC Recover from Devastating Tornadoes

Hagan surveys the damage at Lowe's Home Improvement in Sanford with Sanford Mayor Cornelia Olive and store manager Mike Hollowell.

  • As many North Carolina communities recover from severe tornadoes, Senator Hagan is committed to helping storm victims get back on their feet.

  • Immediately following the tornadoes, Hagan traveled to storm-devastated areas across the state. She toured the wreckage at the Lowe's in Sanford, where employees heroically guided customers to safety. She toured severely-damaged Shaw University with University President Dr. Irma McClaurin and Mayor Charles Meeker. In Bertie County, one of the most devastated counties in the state, she visited storm-ravaged neighborhoods and received a briefing at the Operations Center for Disaster Relief.

  • In the wake of the storms, Hagan led members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation to send letters asking the Administration to support federal disaster assistance requests made by Governor Perdue. The President designated 19 North Carolina counties as disasters, bringing federal resources and assistance to families and businesses.

  • Last week, Hagan visited the Joint Field Office Disaster Relief Command Center in Garner for an update on tornado recovery from FEMA and state and local officials.

  • North Carolinians in need of storm-related assistance can visit Senator Hagan's Storm Recovery page on her website, and call her office toll-free at 877-852-9462.
