Hagan Statement on Senate Unemployment Insurance Vote

Tuesday, January 7, 2014

Washington, DC- U.S. Senator Kay Hagan today released the following statement after the Senate approved a procedural vote, 60-37, on legislation that would reinstate North Carolina's eligibility for Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits as part of a broader bill to extend the federal program:

"I'm pleased the Senate has advanced this crucial bipartisan legislation that includes my provision to restore a vital lifeline for thousands of North Carolinians who are struggling to find work. As we slowly regain jobs lost during the Great Recession, out-of-work North Carolinians should not suffer because of the General Assembly's reckless actions. And even though our state's unemployment rate continues to decrease, the long-term unemployment crisis -and the North Carolinians who cannot find work - should not be ignored. As this bipartisan unemployment insurance legislation moves forward in the Senate, I'm hopeful my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will come together to restore this important safety net for thousands of North Carolinians and more than a million Americans across the country."

The Senate is expected to hold additional votes on this legislation later this week.
